Yard management is the practice of tracking and controlling vehicles, trailers, and containers in the yard between the gate and the dock — in real time. Using GPS, RFID, BLE, and geofences, a Yard Management System (YMS) captures check-in, assigns slots and docks, monitors queues and dwell time, and gives the whole operation one live view of what's parked where and for how long.

A yard management system (YMS) is software that tracks and controls vehicles, trailers, and containers in the yard between the gate and the dock. Using GPS, RFID, BLE, and geofences, it captures check-in, assigns parking slots and docks, monitors dwell time and queues, and provides a live map of the whole yard — replacing radios, whiteboards, and manual checks with real-time visibility.
Dwell time is how long a trailer or container sits in the yard before it's moved to a dock, unloaded, or dispatched. High dwell time ties up trailers, docks, and drivers, and often triggers detention charges from carriers. Reducing dwell time is the primary goal of yard management, because it directly frees up assets and capacity across the operation.
Detention and demurrage fees happen when trailers or containers aren't turned around within the agreed time — usually because no one knew the asset was ready or where it was. A YMS tracks every vehicle's dwell time in real time and alerts staff before thresholds are breached, so trailers are moved and released promptly. A WMS (warehouse management system) manages what happens inside the four walls — inventory, picking, packing, and shipping.
