What is BLE Gateway Tracking?
BLE Gateway Tracking is the most practical and cost-effective approach to real-time indoor location. Small Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) tags are attached to assets or worn by people. Fixed gateways — installed on walls, ceilings, or columns at key points throughout the facility — continuously scan the BLE radio environment and detect any tag within their range. When a tag's advertisement packet is received by one or more gateways, the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) values are forwarded to SmartX HUB, which maps the asset to a zone or calculates a triangulated position on the floor plan.

Passive Scanning — No Tag Action Required
BLE tags broadcast advertisement packets on a 100–1,000 ms interval — a passive, one-way radio transmission that requires no pairing, no network connection, and no reader interaction. The gateway listens continuously and logs every detected tag ID alongside the received signal strength (RSSI). Tags simply broadcast; gateways simply listen.

RSSI — Signal Strength as Proximity Proxy
RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) measures the power level of the received BLE signal in dBm. A stronger signal (less negative dBm) indicates the tag is closer to the gateway; a weaker signal indicates distance. SmartX HUB uses calibrated RSSI thresholds — adjusted per facility, per gateway model, and per environment — to determine which zone or room a tag is in at any given moment.

Zone-Based Location (Single Gateway)
In zone mode, each gateway defines a logical area — a room, a corridor segment, a dock bay, or a work cell. When a tag's RSSI from a given gateway exceeds the configured entry threshold, SmartX HUB places the asset in that gateway's zone on the floor plan. The gateway with the strongest RSSI wins ownership of the tag when multiple gateways overlap. Zone sizes are configurable from 2 m to 20+ m radius.

RSSI Triangulation (Multi-Gateway)
When three or more gateways detect the same tag simultaneously, SmartX HUB applies weighted RSSI triangulation to compute a more precise estimated position on the floor plan — typically within 1–5 meters. The algorithm weights each gateway's contribution by its RSSI value and known position, reducing the effect of radio noise and reflections. Kalman filtering smooths position transitions between updates.

Multi-Year Tag Battery Life
Because BLE tags only transmit — never receive — their radio duty cycle is extremely low. A standard BLE asset tag broadcasting every 1 second typically achieves 3–5 years of battery life on a small coin cell or built-in lithium cell. Industrial-grade tags with larger batteries achieve up to 7 years. This means zero battery maintenance overhead for most large deployments over multi-year operational periods.

RSSI Triangulation Mode

When a tag is simultaneously visible to three or more gateways, SmartX HUB calculates a weighted centroid position based on each gateway's RSSI and known coordinates. The result is a continuous position estimate displayed as a dot on the interactive floor plan — updated every few seconds. Accuracy depends on gateway density, environment, and the degree of radio interference present.
