What is BLE Gateway Tracking?

BLE Gateway Tracking is one of the most practical and cost-effective approaches to real-time indoor location. Small Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) tags are attached to assets or worn by people. Fixed gateways — installed on walls, ceilings, or columns — continuously scan the BLE environment and detect any tag within range. The RSSI (signal strength) values are forwarded to SmartX HUB, which maps the asset to a zone or calculates a triangulated position on the floor plan. Passive Scanning — No Tag Action
BLE tags broadcast advertisement packets on a 100–1,000 ms interval — a passive, one-way transmission requiring no pairing, no network, no reader interaction. The gateway listens continuously and logs every detected tag ID with its RSSI. Tags simply broadcast; gateways simply listen.

RSSI — Signal Strength as Proximity
RSSI measures the power of the received BLE signal in dBm. A stronger signal means the tag is closer to the gateway; a weaker signal means it's further away. Zone-Based Location (Single Gateway)
In zone mode, each gateway defines a logical area — a room, corridor, dock bay, or work cell. When a tag's RSSI exceeds the configured entry threshold, SmartX HUB places the asset in that gateway's zone. The gateway with the strongest RSSI wins ownership when zones overlap. Zone sizes configurable from 2 m to 20+ m radius.

RSSI Triangulation (Multi-Gateway)
When three or more gateways detect the same tag, SmartX HUB applies weighted RSSI triangulation to compute an estimated floor-plan position — typically within 1–5 meters. The algorithm weights each gateway's contribution by its RSSI and known position, reducing radio noise. Filtering smooths position transitions between updates.
