Technology Overview

What is Bluetooth AoA?

Angle of Arrival (AoA) is a direction-finding capability introduced in Bluetooth Low Energy 5.1. Instead of estimating distance through signal strength (RSSI) — which is imprecise and unstable — AoA measures the precise angle at which a tag's signal arrives at a multi-antenna locator array. This delivers indoor positioning accuracy up to 10× better than traditional BLE beacon systems, reaching ±0.1 meters in real-world deployments.

📐
Angle of Arrival — Not Signal Strength
Traditional BLE beacons measure received signal strength (RSSI) to estimate distance. RSSI is easily distorted by obstacles, multipath reflections, and radio interference — producing accuracy of only 3–10 meters. AoA instead measures the precise angle at which the BLE signal arrives at the locator's antenna array, delivering stable ±0.1 m accuracy regardless of environment.
02
📡
Multi-Antenna Phase Difference
The AoA locator contains a phased antenna array with multiple elements spaced precisely apart. When the tag's Constant Tone Extension (CTE) signal arrives, each antenna element receives it at a slightly different phase. The locator's processor measures these IQ phase differences to calculate the signal's azimuth angle (horizontal) and elevation angle (vertical) with high precision.
03
📍
Single-Locator 2D or 3D Positioning
A single AoA locator with a known installation height can compute a tag's unique 3D spatial coordinate using azimuth + elevation angles combined with the anchor's fixed position. For large areas, multiple locators overlap coverage zones. Their combined angle calculations improve global accuracy further and eliminate ambiguity in complex multi-floor environments.
04
🔋
Ultra-Low Power Tags
BLE 5.1 AoA tags transmit only brief direction-finding packets at configurable intervals. The transmit duty cycle is extremely low — allowing tag batteries to last up to 5 years in continuous operation without replacement. Tags are lightweight, compact, and suitable for wearables, asset labels, and vehicle-mount configurations.
05
🔄
Real-Time Position Updates
Tag positions update continuously — typically every 1–5 seconds depending on configuration. The SmartX HUB positioning engine aggregates angle data from all nearby locators, applies Kalman filtering to smooth trajectories, and publishes precise X, Y, Z coordinates to the platform in real time. Location history and trajectory replay are stored indefinitely.
06
🌐
Backward Compatible with BLE 4.0+
AoA locators are backward compatible with all Bluetooth 4.0 and later devices — including smartphones. This means the same infrastructure can serve both high-precision AoA tags (for workers and critical assets) and standard BLE phones (for visitor wayfinding and mobile navigation), maximizing ROI per locator installed.
Key Advantages

Why AoA Outperforms Every Other Indoor Technology

Bluetooth AoA combines the sub-meter accuracy previously only achievable with costly UWB infrastructure — at a fraction of the cost, with a global open standard, and full compatibility with existing BLE ecosystems.

🎯
Sub-Meter 3D Accuracy
AoA achieves ±0.1 m positional accuracy in real-world environments — 10× better than RSSI-based BLE beacons (3–10 m) and comparable to UWB, but at significantly lower infrastructure cost. Accurate enough to distinguish an asset on a specific shelf, in a specific room, or on a specific floor of a building.
±0.1 m · 3D Position
📶
Wide Coverage per Locator
A single AoA locator can cover a wide zone — typically 30–50 m in open spaces — and track hundreds of tags simultaneously. This significantly reduces the number of infrastructure access points required compared to Wi-Fi RTLS or UWB, lowering installation cost and complexity in large facilities like warehouses, hospitals, and factories.
30–50 m Coverage Radius
💰
Low Total Cost of Ownership
AoA infrastructure costs far less than UWB to deploy and maintain. Tags run for up to 5 years on a single battery. The Bluetooth 5.1 standard is royalty-free and supported by every major chipset vendor — eliminating proprietary lock-in and keeping long-term operational costs predictable and low.
60–70% Lower vs. UWB
🔋
5-Year Tag Battery Life
BLE AoA tags transmit brief CTE packets at configurable intervals — consuming minimal power. A single coin cell or small lithium battery powers a tag for up to 5 years of continuous operation. This dramatically reduces maintenance overhead versus Wi-Fi tags (months) or UWB tags (1–2 years) across large deployments of hundreds or thousands of tags.
Up to 5 Years per Charge
🌐
Open Bluetooth Standard
AoA is defined in the Bluetooth Core Specification 5.1 — an open, globally ratified standard maintained by the Bluetooth SIG. Any compliant tag works with any compliant locator. No proprietary protocols, no vendor dependency. The same BLE infrastructure simultaneously supports high-precision AoA tags and standard BLE smartphones for wayfinding.

Works Where GPS Cannot
GPS signals are unavailable or unreliable indoors, underground, in tunnels, on ships, and in dense urban buildings. AoA delivers the equivalent of GPS-level precision in any enclosed space — enabling real-time tracking in warehouses, hospitals, factories, mines, offshore platforms, parking structures, and cold storage facilities.

  • Man-down and SOS detection — automatic alarm if a worker falls or presses emergency button
  • Lone worker monitoring — alert if worker is stationary for configurable period in isolated area
  • Emergency mustering — real-time headcount and location of every person during evacuation
  • Automated attendance — entry/exit records generated by indoor location, no manual sign-in
  • Work hours analytics — time per zone, floor, or work station per shift per employee
  • Contractor management — track third-party personnel in authorized areas only
  • Patient and visitor tracking in hospitals — wandering alerts for vulnerable patients
🛢️
Offshore Platform — Worker Mustering
Workers wear BLE AoA tags on their safety badges. SmartX HUB tracks every individual in real time across all decks. During emergency drills or actual incidents, the mustering dashboard shows every person's last known location, enabling evacuation coordinators to confirm headcount in under 30 seconds.
🏥
Hospital — Patient Wandering & Staff Response
Cognitive patients wear lightweight BLE tags. SmartX HUB triggers immediate alerts when a patient exits an authorized ward zone. Simultaneously, nursing staff locations are visible on the platform, enabling the closest available nurse to be dispatched in seconds — improving response time and reducing incident risk.
🏗️
Construction Site — Restricted Zone Enforcement
Workers without the required PPE certifications are blocked from entering defined danger zones via geo-fence rules in SmartX HUB. Supervisors receive immediate push notifications for any unauthorized entry. Daily zone-time reports demonstrate NR-18 and safety compliance to auditors automatically.
Manufacturing — Fatigue & Lone Worker Safety
SmartX HUB monitors worker movement patterns on the factory floor. Workers remaining stationary beyond configurable thresholds in isolated areas trigger lone-worker alerts. Fatigue analytics flag abnormal behavior patterns for supervisors to intervene proactively — before incidents occur.
