Bluetooth AoA Indoor Positioning
Angle of Arrival (AoA) is one of the most accurate indoor real-time location technologies available — delivering sub-meter 3D positioning for people, assets, and vehicles across any enclosed facility where GPS cannot reach, at a fraction of the cost of UWB.
What is Bluetooth AoA?
Angle of Arrival (AoA) is a direction-finding capability introduced in Bluetooth Low Energy 5.1. Instead of estimating distance through signal strength (RSSI) — which is imprecise and unstable — AoA measures the precise angle at which a tag's signal arrives at a multi-antenna locator array. This delivers indoor positioning accuracy up to 10x better than traditional BLE beacon systems, reaching sub-meter precision in real-world deployments. See how it compares to other technologies in our RTLS technologies comparison guide.
Why AoA Excels for Indoor Location
Bluetooth AoA combines sub-meter accuracy — previously only achievable with costly UWB infrastructure — at a fraction of the cost, with a global open standard, and full compatibility with existing BLE ecosystems.

Bluetooth AoA Questions Answered
Angle of Arrival (AoA) is a direction-finding capability introduced in Bluetooth 5.1. A multi-antenna locator measures the precise angle at which a tag's signal arrives, calculating azimuth and elevation to determine the tag's 3D position. This delivers sub-meter indoor accuracy — up to 10 times better than traditional RSSI-based BLE beacons.
Bluetooth AoA achieves sub-meter accuracy — typically in the range of 0.1 to 0.5 meters in real-world deployments — with full 3D (X, Y, Z) positioning. This is roughly 10 times more accurate than RSSI-based BLE beacons (3–10 m) and approaches UWB precision, but at lower infrastructure cost.
RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) estimates distance from signal power, which is easily distorted by obstacles and reflections, giving only 3–10 m accuracy. AoA instead measures the precise angle at which a signal arrives at a multi-antenna array, delivering stable sub-meter accuracy regardless of environment.
Both deliver sub-meter 3D accuracy. UWB reaches 10–30 cm and slightly higher precision, but at higher infrastructure cost and shorter tag battery life (1–2 years). AoA offers sub-meter accuracy with up to 5-year tag battery life and lower cost, using the open Bluetooth standard. AoA suits most enterprise deployments; UWB suits the most demanding precision use cases.
Bluetooth AoA tags last up to 5 years on a single battery. They transmit only brief Constant Tone Extension (CTE) direction-finding packets at configurable intervals, keeping power consumption very low. This significantly reduces maintenance compared to Wi-Fi tags (months) or UWB tags (1–2 years).
Yes. AoA is designed for indoor and GPS-denied environments — warehouses, hospitals, factories, tunnels, ships, underground areas, and dense buildings. It delivers GPS-equivalent precision indoors, enabling real-time tracking of people, assets, and vehicles anywhere satellite signals cannot reach.
